Limits of Crabs!!

Wednesday, November 14th, 2012

Tuesday, November 13th 2012– Another fine day of crabbing. The Telstar* left the dock at 0700 hrs and headed up north to the prime crabbing grounds. Beautiful morning out. Seas are calm with little or no wind. Chance of rain but we’re ready for it. After a 35 minute run, we stopped at our first pot. 10 nice big jumbo’s! Needless to say, we scored limits for 8 anglers (80 crabs) without having to pull all our pots. We were back at the dock by 0930hrs. By 0940 the crabs were cooking. I must say, I had a very good lunch today! Fresh crab!!

Crab season is here!!!!

Sunday, November 11th, 2012

Crab season opened on the 3rd of November. From now on, it will open the first Saturday in November. I’ve done several trips since the opener and scored limits every trip. The numbers seem to be holding strong. On the opener we set our pots about 2 hours before we started to pull them. We averaged 8 crabs per pot. Not bad for a 2 hour soak! The size is great too! They’re just a little bit light but Teddy took home a limit of 10 and weighed them and they weighed 21 pounds. That’s just over 2 lbs per crab. Our best pot so far has been 18 keepers. That’s what I like to see. The week before Thanksgiving is a busy week so if you would like to go, I recommend calling soon before I fill up. I look forward to hearing from you. Fish-On!

Fish-On!!

Friday, September 21st, 2012

Sept 21st, 2012 — We were at the right place at the right time today! We fished north 3 miles off Pudding Crk in 65 ft of water. Right off the bat, “fisn-on!!” Score one nice salmon for the Telstar*. Shortly after that “fish-on!!” There’re 2. Next thing you know we hooked into a double (I don’t even have my bow rods in yet). The action remained like that for about one and a half hours. After that they went off the bite. We ended up landing 6 out of the 7 salmon hooked. We lost the last one we had on, and it was fighting better than any of the ones we landed ( and they were all nice grade except one, but it will be the best tasting!). Most fo the fish were caught on an anchovy under a scrambled egg hoochie behind a flasher at 50′ with a 2 lb ball. Biggest one was landed by Suzie Copeland out of El Paso TX. She also had another fish which wasn’t much smaller. Great times were had by all. 4 anglers with 6 salmon! Fish-On!!

Late season salmon bite

Friday, September 21st, 2012

9/16/12 — The salmon fishing has been scratchy, which is typical for this time of year. There are lots of fish still being caught but you have to be at the right place at the time. Today, Kelly Washburn from Ukiah was at the right place. He landed the only fish for the day weighing in at 23 pounds ! The ocean was nice and the water temp is still good for there to be potential for some good fishing. Fish-on!

8/18/12 19 lb average!

Sunday, August 19th, 2012

Saturday, August 18th — The Telstar* had 2 trips today. On the morning trip the weather was enjoyable and the people were great! The fog was pretty thick, but there was no wind so the temperature was warm. As far as fish… like I say, the people were great.

In the afternoon — we found some salmon that were hungry. We fished about the same place as Thursday. The fish were biting the jail bird hoochie over a cut anchovy behind a flasher at 35 to 45 pulls with a 2 lb weight. We landed 4 nice ones and lost 1. Picture; Cliff Bolin/Paradise-17 lbs, Michael Macarthy/Chico-14 lbs, Joel Burkett/Paradise-25 lbs, and Jim Dally/Paradise-20 lbs. Fish-On!

Salmon it is

Friday, August 17th, 2012

8/16/12 — We fished north only about 3 miles. I was going to head up farther north, but there was a little fleet not far from the buoy and I saw at least 2 of them playing fish. So I decided to stop and give it a try. Within no time we were hooked up. Nice grade of fish. We ended up with 4 fish for 7 anglers from 9 to 20 lbs. Another nice day on the ocean.

End of Rockfish season

Friday, August 17th, 2012

8/15/12 — Today is the last day of the rockfish season. Why? I’ve been fishing here for 27 years and I cannot come up with a reason. The ocean out front of Fort Bragg is healthier than I’ve ever seen. There is no reason for the closure. The bite was odd today. Half the boat did excellent while the other half did not. We ended up with just over half limits with a dozen lingcod. We fished down south by Mendocino. Great water conditions. The seas were calm. Showing off some of there great catch from left to right are; Bryn and Kelly Goedde-matthews from Davis, Ca. and Aiden Plank from Roseville. Nice fish!

Family fun!!

Friday, August 17th, 2012

August 13th, 2012 — We started off looking for some salmon, but after awhile, I suggested since we have had very little action, and the kids seem kind of restless, let’s do some rockfishing. Turned out to be a good move. Everybody caught fish! We caught at least 9 different kinds of rockfish including lingcod. We fished north a few miles just below Laguna Pt. in about 50 to 70 feet of water.

8/5/12 salmon report

Monday, August 6th, 2012

Sunday, August 5th, 2012 — We fished north off Cleone reef for salmon. The ocean was flat and the winds were calm. We hooked 4 fish and landed all 4! That’s what I’m talking about. Now if we can just hook more! We had 9 anglers aboard the Telstar* today. We saw some nice fish being landed by other boats as well. Some boats went out looking for some Albacore today. I heard some 30 to 40 fish scores from some private boaters within 30 miles. The best score I heard was 90 Albacore. Also inside 30 miles. The weather looks good for Albacore for about 3 more days. Picture left to right; Andrew/Ukiah 20 lbs, Mike/Ukiah 17 lbs, Bob Rice/Fort Bragg 15 lbs, and Bruce/Forestville 14 lbs. Good job guys!! Fish-On  Capt Randy
